Retaining & Shoreline Walls

Rockworks has constructed natural stone "gravity" retaining walls for over 30 years and considered experts in the field. A crucial piece of the design is selecting the appropriate stone for the application. Whether flat ledgestone, angular stone or glacial boulders the consideration of height of wall and the site conditions are critical.

To ensure the best outcome we have developed and engineered stone table for the correct size of stone per height of wall. Additionally we work with select stone suppliers / quarries that have frequently tested the stone using the ARC rockery standards of testing. Our work will pass the test of time as correctly built natural stone walls have for hundreds of years.

We use a minimum of 18 inches of compacted 6 a crushed gravel behind the retaining walls and 21 AA compacted aggregate base.

Shoreline retaining or sea walls have their own set of considerations besides stone selection and size of material. It is also important to evaluate the lake shore bottom which can dictate the use of geo textiles fabrics and/or gravel base combinations.  For additional stability we install 1" x 3" angular stone back fill to prevent erosion from conditions created by increased wave action and or ice push. Additionally, our Natural Shoreline Certified staff not only designs but prepares the MDEQ permitting necessary for shoreline retaining.
